"Ode to my Ovaries and Uterus"
For those of you that have been asking "how I'm doing" and "where I've been", I'm at home recovering from surgery. I really appreciate all the concern and prayers. The surgery went off without a hitch. Good news! No cancer! It's party time!
Last Wednesday, I had surgery to removed a tumor, along with my ovaries. I had already had a hysterectomy in '05. I have to say that I already miss my ovaries. So, I decided to write "An Ode To My Ovaries and Uterus". This will hopefully make it a little easier.
For those of you that are facing a hysterectomy, it will be ok. Maybe this will put a different perspective on things:
"Ode to my Ovaries and Uterus"
You did your job
Through puberty
Through childbirth
And recovery
You made my babies
And did a great job
And kept me from
A constant sob
But now my friend
Your job is through
I find myself not
Needing you
Don’t need the pain
Of fibroids and cysts
The periods
Will not be missed
Don’t need the blood
That never stops
That flows in pints
Instead of drops
Don't give me symptoms
I always feared
Don't need a mustache
Or a beard
Don't need hot flahes
Or mood swings
I'll be just fine
Without those things
Gonna throw away all
My “heavy day” clothes
And line my new panties
Up in rows
And so my friends
You and your cysts
Just had to go
Goodbye, old friends
I'll miss you so
I'll miss the way
You used to grow
With cysts and tumors
And who knows what
Now I have to deal
With this large cut
It's a small price to pay
For no more pain
I just hope now
There's no weight gain
No night sweats
Or Irritibility
No hair loss
Or Anxiety
So as you head off
To that Big Blue Sky
Keep in mind
That I will not cry
I may brush a tear
From my cheek
As I remember the days
When you didn’t leak
And as I live a
Pain-free life
I’ll toast the doctor
And his knife!

OMG! I'm cracking up. I had a hysterectomy back in 2006. I wish I could have laughed about it like you.
I'm trying to keep a good sense of humor. There's nothing sad about no longer having periods and cramps.
My doctor says that I need a hysterectomy. I only have one child so I'm reluctant. Reading your ode makes me think it won't be so bad. I guess there are pluses.
Yes, there are definitely pluses. I had already had all the children I was going to have, so that wasn't an issue for me. If I would have wanted more children, I would have probably gotten a second opinion.
Did you start having menopause symptoms right after surgery? I had my surgery in March of '07. I immediately started having hot flashes, night sweats, and more. My doctor said that they shouldn't have started right away. Did yours?
I noticed the hot flashes the day of surgery, about 2 hours out. So, yes, right away. I didn't realize they were hot flashes at first. I kept telling my husband to turn the air on in the hospital room. He told me that it was alread on 62. I was told by my doctor that I would feel them right away. Within 5 minutes of them putting a hormone patch on me, they disappeared.
