"Deadly Internet Hoax"
Have you heard about the internet hoax that has recently been in the news that resulted in the death of a 13-year old girl? If you haven’t, please click HERE.
This is extremely troubling to me. My kids are not old enough to be involved in things like My Space yet, but it scares me nonetheless.
This poor girl was the victim of a classmate's mother. The mother pretended to be a 16-year old boy that showed interest in her. Then, towards the end, she sent messages to her stating that “the world would be better off without her”.
This girl was already suffering from depression, and the mother that did the hoax knew that. Apparently, she was trying to get information about the girl. This is why she did it in the first place. However, it makes me wonder why she decided to be so mean? Was she trying to push the girl to kill herself? She had to have known that it was a possibility.
Do you think that there should be a law against this type of crime? What should the punishment be?

This outrages me! I cannot believe that this is not already considered a crime. What in the world was this mother thinking? Was there something going on between the girl and the daughter of the perpetrator that made her want this poor girl dead?
I think the woman should be arrested. She should be charged with murder. I wonder what she is feeling today, knowing that she probably is directly responsible for the death of this child.
Yes I believe this woman intentionally sought to do this girl emotional harm and by her own actions pushed her into committing suicide.
What was this grown woman thinking? Did she have nothing better to do? Is she some type of pedophile? Did she have a daughter the same age and was jealous of her? I wonder what her intentions really were. I think that she should have some type of punishment for what she did to this girl, the mind games, terrible things she said to her, etc. They were all neighbors, living only 3 or 4 houses away from each other.
It's good to know that, so far, everyone agrees that this woman should be punished. I'm sure there is someone out there that doesn't think this. It would be interesting to hear from that person.
I think the woman should be charged with negligent homicide. I'm definitely no lawyer. Does anyone know if she could be charged with this?
The problem is that noone can prove that she meant for the girl to kill herself. If they charge her with homicide, what will it come to next? Will kids that are bullies at schools be charged with crimes? I think it was mean, but not necessarily a crime.
I can always count on you, daredevil, to state your true feelings. Thank you. I have to say that I totally disagree with you though. Kids that are bullies is a totally different story than an adult that's a bully. I think that she should have known better and knew the possible consequences of her actions, whereas a child may not.
She had to have known that her killing herself was a possibility. She may have gotten "caught up in the moment", but it's no excuse for a grown woman to do that.
Well, you certainly have the right to disagree with me, but your wrong.
The internet has always been a place where people can speak freely. I think the woman was well within her rights to do what she did. It was a mean and hateful thing to do, but it happens all the time. I don't think there is anything legally that can be done.
I've heard that there is an internet lawyer that is trying to get some laws passed to protect children against this type of crime.
I can see how it would be different to punish a child for doing something like this, but an adult? Come on.
At the very least, a civil suit should be filed (like OJ).
daredevil,
What are you thinking? Do you really think this woman should get off with no punishment or are you just talking legal mumbo jumbo?
I'm mainly talking legalities. I said that it was mean that she did this. Did everyone miss that?
Personally, if it was my child, I would go after her myself. But, they have no legal base for bringing charges against the woman. I mean it happened on the internet. Things much worse than this happen on the internet every day.
Some people never grow up. They try to live their lives through their children therefore acting like children themselves. This is one of the cruelest things I have ever read and that woman should be arrested, charged, convicted and sentenced to prison for a long time. She has no business raising kids. My heart goes out to the victim and her family.
Daredevil you sound heartless. It's either that or you are mentally ill.
they are trying to find a way to charge the woman-
if i remember correctly, there are a few emails that were deleted/not found by the police-
this is very similar to the texas cheerleader mom incident that was hyped into a movie-
obviously that lady has some psychological issues-manipulating someone else's child like that, knowing what she knew about her- the right lawyer may be able to build a case against her-
& yes, schoolyard bullies are starting to be held accountable for their actions & are being charged with crimes-in fact children in elementary school are being charged with all sorts of interesting things- did ya hear about the kid accused of sexual harrassment for hugging a teacher? let's compare that to the kids who allegedly sexually abused a child in the bathroom during lunch (that one is local) or maybe the kids who are on trial for sexual harrassment for slapping butts on slap your fellow student's butt day- there are all sorts of interesting things kids are being charged with at school now a days- heck try taking midol for cramps in highschool during a school day so your parents dont have to check you out- or what if you drop a note in the hallway that says "so &so is da bomb" & see what sort of trouble THAT causes- did these kids get arrested? some of them- was it justified? you be the judge-
now back to a mom who knowingly bullied and coerced a known depressed & troubled teen into killing herself by creating a fictitious identity that HAPPENED to be under the guise of a teenaged boy- lets look at the local cyber crimes- each day we see how the cops have managed to lure some old guy into soliciting sex with "minor's" who are really plants fishing for predators- & we see these folks all over the news as sex offenders- yet this mom who created an alternate identity to literally screw with another child's mind- what do YOU think that child was thinking when she responded to this "boy's" emails & bulletins? they say the girl liked the "boy"-
these same actions, if initiated by a male suspect of the same age as the mother, would take on whole new connotations-
now, today's world, with laws & definitions broadening by the day to encompass crimes/harrassment by same sex folk (ie for those who do not want me to attempt being tactful, gay or homosexual folk) lets take another look at what has happened- we have an adult female posing as a youth male with the purpose of getting this young female to "like" him - all that must be proven is some sort of intent- & whether its defiined or classified suicide/murder or some sort of sexual base- there is probably a way to classify it as a crime-
the main issue here is, does that town want to go that far in this situation.
its all a matter of perspective really- if you take the female gender bias out of it, the scenario begins to change dramatically.
I was not sure if anyone else had seen Fox News but it said that the prosecutors decided NOT to charge the mother that was doing the harassing, Myspacing, etc. with any sort of crime. You would think with all of the laws on the books surely they could have found something to charge her with!
No, I didn't see that. That's horrible. She's lucky that there was a loophole, but I hope that the laws change to protect kids from stuff like this.
